Are you unintentionally choosing disempowering thoughts?

Did you know that  people typically have more than 6,000 thoughts per day, according to a Healthline article and 70-80% of those thoughts are NEGATIVE. 

Which means it’s your job, to be intentional and create a habit of choosing thoughts that will empower you. 

You see, anytime something happens to us our brain gives it a meaning. Let’s say you’re watching one of your friends IG stories and you see a group of your friends out for dinner and you think to yourself, how come no one invited me?

Then your brain starts coming up with all these reasons as to why you didn’t get invited, maybe you even flash back to when you were a child and your friends left you out of a game at recess. Now you’ve been carrying around a belief that you’re not good enough or you’re un-loveable. Since you’re having these thoughts it will then bring on a mixture of emotions. You can sit there and feel upset about it, creating all the reasons why you didn’t get invited and start harboring up resentment. That escalated quickly. In reality you have no idea of the truth behind why they didn’t invite you.

I have a better idea instead of choosing to focus on a story that makes you feel dis-empowered, why not choose to give the scenario an empowering meaning. That goal is to choose to give things that happen you an empowering meaning. Choose a thought that will benefit you. Choose your truth that you will believe that you feel good about. Maybe you think my life is so awesome, they probably thought I had other plans, or they know that this is a season of focusing and saving for my new home, so they were being considerate of my pockets. If you really want to you can even reach out and ask how come no one invited you and maybe let them know you would like to be invited next time. It’s better to have an uncomfortable conversation, than to feel some type of way, not say anything and start cutting people out of your life.

There will be times, where you may not always be able to get the truth that you are seeking from people, but you are in control of the story you create in your head and the meaning you’re giving things and this way you will be more in control of your emotions and feel happier. Even the God knows the importance of focusing our thoughts on the good. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8.

It’s important that we are aware of our self-talk and the stories we are telling ourselves. Try to become more aware of the meaning you’re giving situations that happen to you this week. It’s easy to jump into the old habit of choosing a negative narrative, but let’s build up the habit of choosing an empowering meaning behind things and watch how it will allow you to have a happier life.
